OODA and You
A few weeks ago I gave a talk at a company convention in southern California. This company has offices worldwide, is very successful in its line of work, but on the horizon are some dangers. They brought me in to address those dangers. The specifics here do not matter much, only to say that, like a lot of companies that were successful in the 80s and on up to the present, they have come to rely upon a particular business model that is part circumstance and part design.
Loosely put, their upper-tier employees operate more like entrepreneurs, each one out for him or herself. Each office tends to think of itself as an island, competing with the other branches across the globe. This works to some extent, as these entrepreneurs are very motivated to expand the business. On the other hand, it makes it very difficult to create an overall esprit de corps.
As I was preparing the speech, for some reason an image kept coming to mind--the jet-fighter pilot, and the theories of Colonel John Boyd as it pertains to this form of warfare. Many of you might be familiar with Boyd's most famous theory: the OODA loop. I will paraphrase it for those who are not familiar with it, with the understanding that it is much richer than the few words I am devoting to it here.
OODA stands for Observation, Orientation, Decision, Action. A pilot is constantly going through these loops or cycles in a dogfight: he tries to observe the enemy as best he can, this observation being somewhat fluid, since nothing is standing still and all of this is happening at great speed. With a lightning-quick observation, he then must orient this movement of the enemy, what it means, what are his intentions, how does it fit into the overall battle. This is the critical part of the cycle. Based on this orientation, he makes a decision as to how to respond, and then takes the appropriate action.
In the course of a typical dogfight, a pilot will go through maybe a dozen or so of these loops, depending on how complicated the fight, and how fluid the field. If one pilot can make faster decisions and actions, based on the proper observations and orientations, he slowly gains a distinct advantage. He can make a maneuver to confuse the enemy. After a few such maneuvers in which he is slightly ahead in the cycles, the enemy makes a mistake, and he is able to go in for the kill. Boyd calls these fast transients, and if you are ahead in these transients, the opponent slowly loses touch with reality. He cannot decipher what you are doing, and as he becomes increasingly cut off from the reality of the battlefield, he reacts to things that are not there, and his misreactions spell his death.
Boyd saw this theory as having application to all forms of warfare. He went backwards in military history and showed how this was relevant to the success of Belisaurius, the Mongols, Napoleon Bonaparte, T.E. Lawrence. He saw it as also deeply relevant to any kind of competitive environment: business, politics, sports, even the struggle of organisms to survive. In reading about the OODA loop for the first time, I was struck by its brilliance, but I was not quite sure what to make of it. How exactly does this apply to my own battles, my own life, or to those whom I advise in their affairs?
Then, working on the speech, the image and the idea began to coalesce. A fighter pilot is in a unique spot. He is a rugged individualist who can ultimately only depend on his own creative maneuvers for survival and success. On the other hand, he is part of a team, and if he operates completely on his own strategy, his personal success will translate into confusion on the battlefield.
At the same time, the battlefield itself is so incredibly fluid that the pilot cannot think in traditional linear terms. It is more like complex geometry, or three-dimensional chess. If the pilot is too slow and conventional in his thinking, he will find himself falling further and further behind in the loops. His ideas will not keep pace with reality. The proper mindset is to let go a little, to allow some of the chaos to become part of his mental system, and to use it to his advantage by simply creating more chaos and confusion for the opponent. He funnels the inevitable chaos of the battlefield in the direction of the enemy.
This seemed to me the perfect metaphor for what we are all going through right now in the 21st century. Changes are occurring too fast for any of us to really process them in the traditional manner. Our strategies tend to be rooted in the past. Our businesses operate on models from the 60s and 70s. The changes going on can easily give us the feeling that we are not really in control of events. The standard response in such situations is to try to control too much, in which case everything will tend to fall apart as we fall behind. (Those who try to control too much lose contact with reality, react emotionally to surprises.) Or to let go, an equally disastrous mindset. What we are going through requires a different way of thinking and responding to the world, something I will be addressing in my next two books in great detail. (I am happy to report that these two books have now been sold, and that is why I have been away for a while.)
In essence, speed is the critical element in our strategies. (See the chapter on formlessness in POWER and the blitzkrieg in WAR.) Speed, however, is something that is rarely understood. Napoleon created speed in his attacks because of the way his army was organized and structured. If you read Martin Creveld's book on command, he explains that the speed of Napoleon's army is comparable to any contemporary army, but with the technology of two-hundred years ago. This speed comes from the mission-oriented structure in which his field marshals had great liberty to react in real time and make quick decisions, based on Napoleon's overall strategic goals, and with the incredibly swift communications up and down the chain of command.
Napoleon increased the speed of his army by loosening up the structure, allowing for more chaos in the decision-making process, and unleashing the creativity in his marshals. Speed is not necessarily a function of technology. Technology, as Creveld showed, can actually slow an army down. Look at the North Vietnamese versus the US in the Vietnam War.
We are all in the position of those fighter pilots. Those among us who succeed in this environment know how to play the team game in a different way, not being an automaton, yet not completely a freelancer. We are comfortable working on our own initiative, but also find pleasure in making our individuality fit into the group. We are able to embrace change, to let go of old patterns of operating, and to stay rooted in the moment, observing the battlefield for what it is, not cluttered by preconceptions. We can think fast, let go of the need to control everything, stay close to the environment in which we operate (the streets, our clients), and experiment.
It is a new kind of beast that thrives in this new order.
Your mind is the key that will turn this to advantage, not your wealth, the technology at your command, the number of allies you possess. Whatever success you are now experiencing will actually work to your detriment because you will not be made aware of how slowly you are falling behind in the fast transient cycle. You think you are doing just fine. You are not compelled to adapt until it is too late. These are ruthless times.
Discuss John Boyd and the OODA Loop here. The Power, Seduction and War Room thread for this entry features further reading, analysis, and more input from Robert. Post your thoughts.

TN today
Stormy night. Morning brings overcast skys with all the sounds, sights, and smells of home on a drizzly morning. I always feel like a little boy here. I see some bridges up the road up that I really don't want to have to cross. Today I am just trying to love and savor..and not think. As the idigo girls say "Less I seek some definitive-the closer I am to fine"

Dreams
OK only you guys would understand-or maybe not and just think WTF. My old sensei used to say that after a while in karate, you will notice that you will begin to win the altercations in your dreams. My BS flag immediately went up, but as months went by, I found this to be close to the truth. As you reprogram your body and mind, so go the majority of your dreams. Last night I had a VERY vivid dream and woke up immediately knowing the strategic error I made.
In the dream (already sounds like a biblical story huh) I ended up in a situation with three attackers but only fighting the main one. At first it was hand to hand and then weapons. He was bigger and meaner and truthfully I was scared, but I was the better more experienced fighter (thanks peers). We would engage-I would take damage either getting to the inside OR waiting for his first weapon move--, then I would gain the advantage, make some good strikes or cuts, then step back to evaluate and to see if it was enough for him to quit. It wasn't. This happened about 3 or 4 times and the fight ended up pretty much a draw with a LOTS of damage to both of us and neither physically able to continue.
I immediately woke up knowing my mistake. The mistake I kept making was in paying the price to gain the advantage, then giving it up each time to evaluate his willingness to continue -- also in being a nice guy and not wanting to inflict more damage than the minimum necessary. I kept wanting to do just enough to make him quit. In reality, I had no hope of reading his mind or properly estimating his determination. I kept over estimating his "quitting point" because I was using my life as a reference. The result was that we both ended up with a lot more injuries than if my definition of "neutralize the threat" had been "render him UNABLE to fight while I run away" instead of solely "make him want to stop long enough for me to get away". The bare bones mistake was the periodic stopping to orient and evaluate. A slight change in thinking but a BIG change in strategy and tactics. ( I do realize both definitions of "neutralize" have their place-for example had I been a woman in the dream (of course there would have been hella bigger issues with that one ; )
Of course this is exactly what I teach and talk about with my mouth almost every class. But sometimes the lesson has to be truly brought from your mind to your heart. There is mind faith and there is soul faith. Very rarely do we get a chance to move a belief from one place to the other without having to pay the full "moving fee" to get it there---but---every now and then there is enlightenment--(or too many Cheetos before bed). In either case, maybe it is just a step in my own personal growth, but I learned something I already knew.

Worked on both versions of Side head lock. Seems I can do the roll better at full speed that slow speed. Drop hip first on slow speed
Upward stab. Forget the slide down disarm-too unreliable-- use the turn shoulder in and cup with other hand method.
Lots of just free rolling and exploring-David trying a cross hand throat protect, worked oK. Lesson fight dirty quick. Got tied up once and had nothing- had to tap. Bad situation, Clinch Pick necessary to survive if for real
Jen added a good womans perspective to everything and rolled hard with us.

AAARRRGG!!!
Second set of DL's tweaked back but good. This is the second time. Stupid-little warmup and stretching, questionable form, been off weight for 3 weeks because of heels. Did I mention stupid?? Anyway got a preaching from David--good friends tell you the truth---"you are not going to be happy until you are crippled, I'm coming over, working out in front of you, and reminding you I told you so"
Sadly he is right. So hopelessly addicted to the endorphins, I have not taken 3 straight days off in---can't remember. God and body telling me something. Chronic heel problems, tweaked back, elbow extension.. If I was talking to ANYONE I would say "you are over training". Why do I not listen to my own advice-as I said addiction. Gonna take a week for-reals. Just teach

Turns Out
Found out mom is in hospital alone with I think is fractured vertebrae. Dad is sick and at home-by himself. Nobody know what is going on yet and the tiny Denton clan all seperated.
Jen got in a fight in Oakland with some crackhead in her complex who has threatened death to her and her family.
People I love and want to hold their hand are miles away.
Work is crazy and intense and full of pressure.
Cancer going around.
God is good.
Life is change.
I have faith-not blind faith that all is going to be OK- but faith that the big picture will be so enlightening and awesome and BIG and fantastic, that even the worst things here is nothing really.
Lots of folks have it lots worse.
Time to be a warrior

First Krav Class
Todays was Mahli's first official class. Words cannot describe how proud of her I am. She truly has a natural talent for athletics and martial arts especially. Wonder where she got that? Doing burpees, working side mount, buck trap and roll on a record setting day of heat with no AC in the studio. Sweating like a true Kravist. Great job Nub!!!! and thanks. What a great day for a dad.

Great Blog Post!!
Failure Training by John Whitman
Any Krav Maga instructor worth his salt knows that we are making a mistake if we just train techniques. Techniques have to be applied under stress, during drills and in scenarios that come as close as possible (given logistics and safety issues) to reality. This is a basic tenet of our training. “Success” for our students can’t be measured by their understanding of the technique…to the extent that it can be measured at all, it has to be measured in their ability to perform that technique adequately under extreme stress.
But what happens when they fail? What tools or training are we giving them when the technique doesn’t work? When the gunman pulls back on the gun too fast for us, or we fail to trap the knife arm? This is a worthwhile topic for discussion and, in my opinion, a totally legitimate area of training that many of us might not be exploring. As instructors, we should ensure that our students training includes real-time reactions to situations where our vaunted techniques get fucked up.
The obvious (and very Krav Maga-like) solution is aggressiveness. If you miss the gun during Gun From The Front (for example), burst in, catch the gun any way that you can, and counterattack like a madman until the threat is neutralized. But I want to give me students a basic strategy for how to burst in (all call this family of defenses my “Oh shit” defenses…not sure how I’m going to publish that). Once they understand the defense and can execute it aggressively, I want them to experience failure and react aggressively and decisively to that situation. I build into the training drills moments of flawed technique or extra-sharp attacker reactions and make the defenders deal with it.
There is a downside to this training. I can almost guarantee the following: if you incorporate drills where the defender must attempt one technique, fail, and then transition to some other movement, at least some of your students will cheat the first technique in order to prepare for the second. This is obviously unacceptable. They must make the initial defense decisively and aggressively…and THEN make adjustments on the fly if things don’t work out. (Can you think of a better metaphor for life?)
This last observation begs the question: when in training do we incorporate these sorts of failure drills? If we introduce them too early, then we destroy the student’s confidence in the basic technique. A good rule of thumb is to let the student train on the basic technique until they have a good, solid understanding and can execute it well under stress. Once they have that ability, start pushing the envelope. Introduce them to real-life scenarios where failure is certainly a possibility, then give them tools to use in those situations.
Obviously, we must start with basic techniques and principles—not simply because those techniques and principles are inviolate, but because those tools allow students to act decisively and aggressively, and it is decisiveness and aggressiveness that will safe their lives. Once they have those basic ideas, they must transfer that decisiveness, they must use that aggressiveness, during higher stress situations that are outside their comfort zone. When we do that, we are bringing them a greater measure of safety.

Kettlebell WOD
Five Rounds/bell can't touch ground/20kg kb/2.5 min break between each round
5 left snatches--5 right snatches--5 left c&p--5 right c&p--20 swings
This was hellish, especially with the 20. Confirms my lactic acid recover time is ~3.0 min. Had to drop to 3 snatches and clean/presses last round.

Seminars and SS
Houston Alexander seminar. Some decent cardio drills ( side to side hop, two bear crawl-pushup clap ) Truthfully it was fun, but did not really learn anything. Got in the ring for 15 seconds with him-felt ok about it. First he almost knocked Scott out, then drove him into mat from about 4ft in air--bad hit on head and neck. Uncalled for, unnecessary, and damn dangerous for a person with a pre existing neck condition. Just a dumb ass move---pro or not.
PAR seminar
Gun from Front cupping
Gun from front on knees
Gun from some one in your guard
Gun to you head from mounted.
Practice and the for real with redman
** Had a validation experience in that the first take away from redman did not come of as clean as I would have liked, I immediately went to head butts and take down controlling gun all the way and making disarm. Also with Dave, gun hit floor, and without thought, we were fighting for it. You always work toward the goal of adaptation on the fly-it worked today.
Still had energy when I got home so.....

Maddi's Broke Foot
Well first kid with a broken bone. Maddi took out a foot on the skateboard yesterday. There was never a doubt it would be her, quite the daredevil. Tough kid ever since the first cells divided. Made it into the world when many others didn't. Love her and am proud of her. Not for a broken foot-just because she is who she is.

Maddi's Birthday!!
Well officially a pre teen now. 12. Had a great birthday, Linda took her on a shopping spree (lots of things I think are too short) Then to Stella Nova for a make over. She looked beautiful but oh man, way too grown up. Mom fixed her a blue berry pie, she got a ipod nano. Just her and I went to the Pet Expo with Pixie. Had a great time. It was great seeing her smile so much!!! Really enjoyed our time-remembered carrying her around the block like a football and touching the lucky leaf. Love this kid
Running WHAT?
Ran >4k
I hate running but beautiful day, took off, heels killing me, knees aching, nuts hurting but after about 1k, felt better and was afraid to stop. Crappy form, slow time, but no stopping and first run since last fall. Iced heels and pilled up -morning should be lovely. I hate running

Survival
Well, this has certainly been the most stressful work week in a very long time. Eight balls in the air each day every day. Only threw one thing-other than that, handled things OK.
Perspective. Got this good friend I work with. If you were handing out cancer, you would want her to be in the back of the line, just such a gentle soul with a servants heart. Well she had a little surgery, and found she was in front of the line. You know, here you are life trucking along--then one phone call, a few words, and your whole life changes.
I know that in all things God can bring good, I also know that it must be horribly scary to wake up every morning and remember you have cancer.
Fuck cancer. I hate it and what it does to good people.
Got to remember God is in the miracle business, if you win, you are a testament to His healing-if you lose, you get to be with Jesus, no pain or crying.
I am better of ignoring my own mortality. Right now -today-I am healthy and cancer free, gaining the wisdom to appreciate that more every day. Bad days are relative

Jen and Family back to Cali
Goodbyes suck. Jen and family trucked back to Cali this AM after a year here. Yea she has to live her own live and all that suff. Yesterday I had best day ever with Charlie-it is like we discovered each other. I swear he just started saying Pa-Paw and getting to the point of being a functional playmate, and there he goes in the Budget truck. Note to self--It ain't about me. Godspeed little family. "Prayers and kiss for a safe trip"

A Worthy Wedding
Usually I am not excited about a weddings but today was different. Can't state enough how much I love and respect Leigh..plus she is one of the most talented Kravists I have ever worked with. Trained with her several years and today watched her get married. Awesome!! Josh is a great guy. It is just so refreshing to see young people loving Jesus more than each other, and serving others more than themselves. The world is better off with folks like these two around. A rare gem indeed...and....a great evening to hold my wife's hand. God bless you good guys!!! Big adventure ahead.
